In the 18th and early 19th centuries fleets had relied on two types of major warship, the ship of the line and the frigate. Napoléon (1850), the first steam battleship It is only when all three characteristics are present that a fighting ship can properly be called an ironclad." Each of these developments was introduced separately in the decade before the first ironclads. Richard Hill: "The (ironclad) had three chief characteristics: a metal-skinned hull, steam propulsion and a main armament of guns capable of firing explosive shells. The ironclad became technically feasible and tactically necessary because of developments in shipbuilding in the first half of the 19th century. 2.1 First battles between ironclads: the U.S.New ships were increasingly constructed to a standard pattern and designated battleships or armored cruisers. There is no clear end to the ironclad period, but towards the end of the 1890s the term ironclad dropped out of use. Many ironclads were built to make use of the ram, the torpedo, or sometimes both (as in the case with smaller ships and later torpedo boats), which a number of naval designers considered the important weapons of naval combat. The quick pace of change meant that many ships were obsolete almost as soon as they were finished, and that naval tactics were in a state of flux. This change was pushed forward by the development of heavier naval guns, more sophisticated steam engines, and advances in metallurgy which made steel shipbuilding possible. Rapid development of warship design in the late 19th century transformed the ironclad from a wooden-hulled vessel that carried sails to supplement its steam engines into the steel-built, turreted battleships and cruisers familiar in the 20th century. Ironclads were designed for several roles, including as high seas battleships, long-range cruisers, and coastal defense ships. This type of ship came to be very successful in the American Civil War.

After the first clashes of ironclads (both with wooden ships and with one another) took place in 1862 during the American Civil War, it became clear that the ironclad had replaced the unarmored ship of the line as the most powerful warship afloat. The first ironclad battleship, Gloire, was launched by the French Navy in November 1859 - narrowly pre-empting the British Royal Navy. The ironclad was developed as a result of the vulnerability of wooden warships to explosive or incendiary shells. The Administrative stuff (buying, assigning crew, tutorials, resupply) is clunky and in need of streamlining. The first battle between ironclads: CSS Virginia (left) vs. Overall, gameplay is fun, engaging and provides great entertainment. In training, you are against bots (PvE), but beyond that, it is all PvP, which is a good thing. If you swap ships back and forth (playing a DD on a mission, versus a BB), the assignments stay. On the upside, should you swap ships, you only have to assign the officers once per ship.
STEEL OCEAN GAME SHIPS HOW TO
The merit awards, gold, silver and EXP relationships are still foggy, but I've finally determined how to assign officers to the ship's stations. Note: "R" and "F" adjust the speed in 25% increments. It was then nice to be able to set a speed and not have to hold down "W" all the time to go. It wasn't until the 3rd tutorial that it was conveyed that pressing F11 brought up the button mapping menu. For example, there wasn't, initially, any explanation as to how to pilot the vessel, and I was trying to do it all through WASD. The tutorials leave something to be desired. As a Former US Navy sailor who was stationed in Pearl Harbor, this was rather irritating. At the time of commencement, I hadn't understood how to select your decided faction, and ended up playing Japan. The initial faction selection process is relatively unguided. Some aspects of the game are still clunky, however, the game is, overall, very fun. Overall, the gameplay is very good and very engaging.
